The Best Time to Install Warm Season Turf Grass

warm_season_turf_installation.jpegThere are many different types of turfgrass, but in general, a turfgrass is considered either warm season or cool season depending on its most active growing season. The two most popular types of warm season grass here in central Georgia are Bermuda and Zoysia.

Of course, warm season turfgrass can be grown from seed, but installing sod provides instant satisfaction and a beautiful, lush lawn.  Are you considering installing a beautiful blanket of fresh, green turfgrass?  Here are some handy “Do’s and Don’ts” for a successful installation of warm season turfgrass sod:

Timing: Late Spring/early Summer is best time to install a warm season turfgrass. Ideally, the sod will be installed when there is less fluctuation in air temperature and it hovers around 80+ degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 70 degrees at night.

Location: Warm season turfgrass thrives in full sun, and should not be installed in shady, cooler areas.

Site Prep: Protect your investment with proper site prep before sod installation, including grading, which will prevent drainage problems –and problems associated with poor drainage – down the road.

Watering:  Although warm season turfgrass is drought tolerant once established, it needs frequent watering after installation to help the roots become established.  Fortunately, there are exceptions to local watering restrictions in DeKalb and Fulton counties for irrigation of new and replanted plant, seed, or turf in landscapes.  We also recommend watering in the morning (rather than the evening) to prevent fungus growth.

Once established, warm season turfgrass is hearty and, with proper care, can withstand the Georgia summertime heat. To maintain your turf’s health, we recommend mowing with a sharp blade and bagging grass clippings.  At Handy Andy Outdoors, we sharpen our mower blades every single day during grass cutting season to ensure healthy, clean cuts.  We also provide top notch site-prep, including grading, and sod installation.  Contact us today
