What should you do if patches of dead, bleached-out grass appear in your zoysia or bermudagrass? And the rest of your grass resumes healthy growth, accentuating the sharp contrast between the diseased area and the healthy area?
Unfortunately those Dead Spots are very common in zoysia and bermudagrass in Georgia. While we offer preventative measures with our warm season fungicide program, there is no absolute method for prevention. The fungi in the soil that causes Dead Sposts is primarily active in the Fall and Spring when it’s cool and moist, and makes the turfgrass more vulnerable to cold temperatures. This weakness to freezing temps makes Dead Sports more prevalent throughout Georgia after a harsh winter during which the grass has been exposed to freezing temperatures for extended periods of time.
I have Dead Spots in my Zoysia or Bermudagrass. Now what?
If you are a Handy Andy Outdoors client, rest assured that our team leaders have probably already recognized the problem during a routine maintenance visit and we’re proactively working to help your healthy grass fill in the dead spot. But it’s important to know that recovery can be slow. Because the dead grass won’t recover, the healthy grass in the surrounding area needs to grow and fill in the dead spot. The rate at which the patch is infilled by healthy grass depends on the rate your healthy grass grows and spreads. This process can be slightly hastened by gently raking out some of the dead grass and providing a fertile area for the new grass to grow, but the dead patch also needs to be monitored for weed encroachment.
In some cases, we may recommend addressing poor drainage issues which can increase the likelihood of Dead Sposts which thrive in damp conditions. Routine aeration and other methods that reduce soil compaction also help avoid the proliferation of Dead Spots.
